Discovering a plant of Grand Suza: Allanblackia
The MAM Foundation values Cameroon's incredible botanical wealth. The use of botanical knowledge requires the collection and identification of plants, in order to preserve endemic, little known or threatened species and to provide a digitized database accessible to all. This documentation will be made available to agricultural producers, students and researchers in the form of scientific and pedagogical documentation and through the organisation of workshops. Botanical knowledge becomes a vehicle for sustainable and economic development, rooted in local knowledge and open to innovation.
Allanblackia, a species found in the Suza region, whose virtues are unknown to the population of Suza.
Allanblackia is a genus of flowering plants, some of which are cultivated for their oil, including Allanblackia floribunda and Allanblackia stuhlmannii. They are usually 10 to 20 metres tall. They have broad, hardy leaves and yellow or white flowers grouped into clusters. Allanblackia fruits are capsules containing oil-rich seeds, which are harvested to extract a highly appreciated vegetable butter.
The oil and butter extracted from the seeds of Allanblackia are widely used in the cosmetic industry for the manufacture of soaps, lotions, in the manufacture of food products such as chocolates and in pharmaceutical industries. Allanblackia provides food to animal species and contributes to soil regeneration. Allanblackia can thus provide economic opportunities for people and generate income for communities.
